Community Art Sunflower: One Sunflower, Many Stories
One Symbol. Many Voices. One Community.
One Sunflower, Many Stories is a collaborative community art project that celebrates creativity, connection, and shared history in Oswego. This large-scale sunflower art project features individual canvas squares, each crafted by a different participant. When assembled, these pieces unite to form one cohesive sunflower, symbolizing how numerous unique stories and lives contribute to a strong community.
This project welcomes artists of all ages and skill levels to share their personal expressions using paints, mixed media, natural materials, or found objects. Each square signifies a story, memory, feeling, or connection to Oswego, reflecting the essence nurtured by the Oswego Historical Society.
There is no wrong way to create. Every square holds importance.
Suggested Materials
We recommend using paints, markers, colored pencils, paint pens, yarn, ribbon, fabric scraps, paper collage, seeds, dried flowers, leaves, sand, small rocks, recycled materials, and mixed media. Lightweight materials are preferred. Please avoid sharp items, glass, or perishable food.
Why This Project Matters
This project encapsulates the heart of Oswego—where people, stories, and creativity converge. Just as each sunflower seed plays a part in forming the flower, each participant’s square contributes to a lasting visual narrative of our community.

This activity is made possible through grant funding from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas (CFSEK) through the 2025 General Funds – Arts & Culture, supporting the Oswego Historical Society’s Historic Arts Workshop Series for Youth.
